How do I test my digital certificate?

Testing your digital certificate will help to confirm if the certificate is installed correctly, and verify you have the correct corresponding password. We recommend printing these instructions as you will need to close all windows and applications before starting the test.

To test your certificate is installed properly follow these instructions:
  1. Before you start the test, close all applications and programs
  2. Open Internet Explorer
  3. Go to
  4. Click 'Next' at the bottom of the page
  5. Select you're certificate and click 'Ok'
  6. If prompted choose to "Grant permission" and enter your password for the certificate
  7. You will receive a "Congratulations" screen after successfully verifying the certificate is installed
You are now able to use your certificate for its intended use.

Troubleshooting steps:

*Error "Page Cannot Be Displayed"
This error is commonly caused from a cached connection by the web browser. We recommend closing all applications you have open and testing the certificate again.

Change browser settings:
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click on 'tools' at the top of the page and choose 'Internet Options'
  3. Type in the password that was chose in step 6 above. The check-boxes are optional, but we recommend putting checks in both. Here is the description of each:
    • If you do not see the 'tools' menu at the top of the page click the 'ALT' button on your key board. It should show up at the top of the screen.
  4. Click on the 'Advanced' tab
  5. Click on "Restore Advanced Settings"
  6. Click 'Apply' then click 'Ok'
  7. Close all browsers and test the certificate again.

*Error "Unable to access the protected key"
This is caused from entering an incorrect password for the certificate. The password was created by you during the retrieval of the certificate.
